THE ULTIMATE GUIDE
Everything you need to know before buying.
Let's face it, cardio equipment isn't cheap and spin bikes are no exception. But no matter what your budget is, there are high quality bikes at every price point - you just need to know what to look for.
DECISION-MAKING FACTOR #1
Flywheel Weight.
Alongside Max User Bodyweight Capacity, this factor is a dead giveaway on the overall build quality of the bike in question. Opt for a flywheel that weighs between 14-20 kg (or 30-44 lbs) minimum.
DECISION-MAKING FACTOR #2
Form of Resistance.
The choice will be between magnetic or friction pad resistance. You'll generally pay more for magnetic resistance as it is quieter and requires little maintenance. However, friction pad resistance tends to allow for more fine-tuned adjustments and can usually achieve heavier maximum tension levels.
DECISION-MAKING FACTOR #3
Type of Drive.
The general options are chain drives or belt drives. Belt drives will be more expensive, again, due to the added quietness and less short-term maintenance. However, chain drives can withstand more wear-and-tear in the long run.
DECISION-MAKING FACTOR #4
Structural Features.
Consider the overall construction of the bike in question. Does it have wheels for easy portability? What do the handlebars look like? Is there a water bottle holder? These are factors that tend to be overlooked but can greatly impact your experience on the bike.
DECISION-MAKING FACTOR #5
Adjustability.
Lastly, you want to make sure that your bike enables a four-point adjustment of seat position, and at least a two-point adjustment of handlebar position. This will be particularly important if you are a tall or short individual to avoid knee or back pain in the saddle.
